Paris meets Thailand this month, as a one-of-a-kind Christian Louboutin sneaker sails into Louboutin World outfitted in traditional, hand-woven Thai silk. The custom pair of Christian Louboutin Gondolastrass sneakers, embellished with gleaming bronze strass and a body of lustrous Ikat Thai silk was created in collaboration with the Vogue Support Project in conjunction with Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s SUPPORT Foundation. Established in 1970 during a time of great strife when a flood destroyed rice crops in Northeastern Thailand, the foundation has employed impoverished women in the area through the rare craft of weaving Ikat silk. A favourite of Her Majesty herself, the creation of this beautiful silk has provided a livelihood for generations of women.
With a mission to bring traditional Thai silk to the international stage, Vogue Thailand launched the Vogue Support Project in 2015, inviting select international fashion houses to design a signature item using Thai silk sourced and supplied from the Her Majesty’s foundation.
The designs created for the May issue of Vogue Thailand, including the bespoke pair of Gondolastrass sneakers, will be auctioned off at the Vogue Thailand Gala held in Bangkok on May 18th. All of the proceeds benefit the Vogue Fashion Fund, which identifies and supports the development of local Thai designers. Last year, a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps donning an elegantly draped Thai silk bow received the highest bid of the night. This year, our low-profile strass emblazoned-sneakers will take the stage for this exciting project.
