Ulyana Sergeenko’s Couture Academics

Ulyana Sergeenko’s opulent couture collections often pull from her strong Russian heritage, with nostalgia stitched into the very fabric of her clothes. Fall 2016 was no exception; Sergeenko transported us to her childhood in 1980’s Russia.

Setting aside decadent eveningwear, this season Sergeenko paid extra attention to day appropriate styles. Ultra high-waisted, pleated trousers and tweed pantsuits paired with glittery lurex bodysuits and sheer sweaters gave the collection a daytime appeal. Ribbed knit tights and knee high socks were paired with Christian Louboutin patent loafers in nude, burgundy and black, which added a studious angle to the collection.

Sergeenko’s display continued with leather miniskirts embroidered with patches, accentuated by large garter belts that gave an extra edgy appeal to models toting vintage motorcycle helmets as if they had just jetted to the catwalk from campus.

These off-kilter academic looks were followed by an onslaught of shimmering, floor-length cowl neck gowns, sequin covered dresses and plumes of opulent feathers. These lavish looks  took to Christian Louboutin heeled loafers in crushed velvet and flat loafers covered in sparking purple and multi glitter. Whether in Soviet era St. Petersburg or her childhood home, Sergeenko’s vision continues to delight with exceptional artistry and old-world glamour.
